December 2, 2009Second Learning Colliquia Seminar
December 2, 2009The learning colloquial was not as good as the first one, however, I learned a lot about the contributions by blacks. I found new motivation to make me succeed and do more in life. Instead of only becoming a nurse, I too want to hold another position. However, my lifetime goal is to become an actress. I know there is high chance that I won’t because thousands of other want to do the same, but I just keep my dreams alive, and believe it will happen. I mentioned that in my blog, because that was the only thing I kept thinking about throughout the whole seminar. I am writing this blog weeks after the presentation, and the only thing I actually recall about the presentation is that the speaker was very dull. It was freezing, there wasnt alot of people and honestly, I fell asleep for like the last 25-30 minutes. I can’t take anymore of those!

TILT
December 2, 2009After going throught the TILT program on the computer, I must say that is the most BORING thing we could have ever had to do! There were three quizzes full of nothing but dumb things we should have already learned by now. Honestly, after the 1st quiz, I skimmed through the rest so fast. Thats probably wht my score wasnt as high as it definitely could of been, but I was falling asleep while I was going through it. I guess I can’t say it was a complete waste of my time because it was actually a requirement for the course, but I must say that reading 3 long modules and taking the quizzes was ridiculously boring! I’m not knocking the system, but seriously though, they could definitely shorten it a little bit.
Journey Away!
December 2, 2009JAMAICA
I decided to write on the country Jamaica. I love this place for many reasons. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. Not to mention, it has the BLUEST water ever! I also have many friends that come from Jamaica. So it is kind of interesting to learn a little something about where their from and their culture.
Jamaica has many weaknesses. Being a third world country, they have very poor areas throughout the country not making it easy for the economy. A very BIG problem Jamaica has is violence. The violent crimes are one of the greatest social problems facing Jamaica. For over 20 years, Jamaica has experienced an increased in homicides and violent assaults. Many attempts made throughout the years to reduce the number of violent crimes occurring in the island have been tried, such as increasing police mobility and firepower, but have all seemed to fail.
Despite all these downfalls, Jamaica does have some strengths. Mining contributes to a BIG part of the country’s economy. Two thirds of the island are made of limestone, and Jamaica is the world’s third largest producer of bauxite, following Australia and Guinea. They are also leading in the world’s largest sugar production. However, Its most common factor is tourism. One of every three employed workers in Jamaica works in tourism and services. In 2000, Jamaica hosted 1.3 million visitors, and tourism and services contributed $1.33 billion to the economy, which was up 4.2 percent from 1999. The majority of visitors, 71.3 percent, is from the United States. The United Kingdom sends 10.2 percent, and 8.1 percent come from Canada. And the numbers just keep going up from there as the years go by! Jamaica has to keep its status as a popular tourist destination. Political trouble has injured the tourist industry in the past, and may well do so again. Fortunately, this beautiful island keeps visitors coming back year after year.

Physical Fitness
December 2, 2009After viewing the powerpoint, I know for a fact now that I am not as healthy as I used to be. In fact, I am very below the average level. Since I’ve been here at Howard University, I have done a lick of exercising of any kind and its SAD, because that’s just not me! I have cheered my whole life (since i was four) and danced the past three years, so exercising was a regular day to day routine for me. According to the powerpoint, to be on a good level you should at least exercise 3 or 4 times a week. Since being here, I exercise 0 times a week. Some of the principles of exercise that stood out to me was REGULARITY AND SPECIFICITY. These two stood out to me because I feel like those are two words I have always followed when it came to me and exercising. It was a regular activity I did to reach specific goals in my life. After looking over the powerpoint and reading this blog, I have realized that exercise was once a BIG part of my life that I should not let go.
How I Became a BISON!
December 2, 2009For the last 7 years of my life my plans was to become a Georgia Bulldog! Growing up a true Georgia southern girl, that is the only school that was imbedded in my mind. However, as I approached my last years of high school, it became difficult. Taking Honors Physics and Honors Calculus at the same time during my junior year, the best year of my high school life, resulted in my GPA dropping, which took me by surprise. I started to feel UGA was not going to be my home for the next four years.
I began to look into other schools that might catch my interest. However, at this point Howard was not even on my mind. Having no plans of leaving Georgia, I started to take Georgia State into consideration. Then, for some reason I realized that I wanted to attend an HBCU. I just felt like I really wanted to be a part of something I was not used to, many intelligent African-Americans! Crazy, I know! My mother was very happy with the idea.
So my search began. I narrowed it down to Spelman College, a school my mother always wanted me to attend, and Howard University a school I heard on Ludacris’s song (I’m Serious!). Spelman was definitely at the top because of financial reasons and it was very close to home. However, as senior year was approaching the end, I started to realize that I needed something new in my life. I wanted to try a new city, new atmosphere, far away from home, to just start over all together because that is what the college experience is all about. Howard was it! Then, my best friend got her acceptance letter to Howard as well, which was a big plus! Without any scholarships, (family) legacy, or anything, I ended up 10 hours away from home and that is how I became a BISON!

It is a way for me to be around people from my homestate and the south in general, that I have things in common with.
DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC.- Delta Sigma Theta is a non-profit organization that strives for academic excellence and providing public service all over, making it one of the largest black women organizations in the world. Learning Colliquia Seminar
December 2, 2009I know I am very late with all of my blogs, but better to do it then to not do it at ALL! Attending the Learning Colliquia Seminar many weeks ago, you would think I would have forgotten everything Dr. Carr spoke on. Well, I did! However, lucky me, I took notes during the entire seminar. So, I am writing this blog to the best of my knowledge and notes.
On the way to this seminar, I had already planned to fall asleep in the back row. I had my jacket and I was ready! However, once it actually started and Dr. Carr began to speak, he grabbed my attention right away. The way he speaks with such enthusiasm and charismatic in his voice made me just want to pay attention. It actually turned out to be very interesting. The topic of the seminar was “What is Research”. When I first read this, I just thought oh no is he seriously about to talk about how to do a research paper or something. However, he did not. It was a interesting discussion and his presentation made it even better.
I do not know about everyone else, but to me personally it seemed like for a minute all he was discussing was history about Howard. For instance, the first four students of Howard were four white daughters of two of the founders of the school. Also, the Howard University hospital used to be Griffin Stadium. This was the home to the Washington Senators baseball team. It actually was helpful to me, however, because I had not done the first blog yet either! VERY PITIFUL!
Throughout the presentation, he began to point out three very important steps we should follow while doing research; Be Present, Read and Write, and Speak to After. These are the ground rules for research. Be Present basically is saying that we should take the research of others into consideration when we are doing our own research. Also, for us to just be present not only physically, but mentally as well. Read and Write is saying as freshman, we need to make sure we know how to read material thoroughly and write about it later, like notes. Speak to After is just educating others as we learn. It is good to share knowledge with everyone.
The most interesting part of the seminar to me was actually the story about how Howard University was given the opportunity to put a research team together and study The African Burial Ground. That situation is amazing to me. For these historical artifacts to be studied and examined by African-Americans from this college is just amazing.
In my opinion, the seminar was interesting. He explained a lot about what our purpose is as freshman, like what we need to do to be successful. I believe all of our seminars should have interesting speakers, such as Dr. Carr. However, it does not have to be three hours long. After awhile, honestly, students tend to lose focus. I am one of them.

The Library System
December 2, 2009I been completed the assignment, but totally forgot to blog. However, having to complete the library worksheet was kind of difficult since I had neer been to the library before. I couldnt find anything. So, I decided to watch the virtual tour on the Howard website first. After seeing the virtual tour, it made my visit to library for the second time much easier. It showed me all the different things the libraries have to offer that i was not aware of and where it is located. When I visited Founder’s Library, I was most interested in the musuem. It was so interesting and well put together. The most difficult part was MSRC, because i could never catch it open! The UGL is a very helpful place undergraduates. My favorite resource there would have to be the course reserves. That is a very convient way to get assignments and materials for a class. Overall, the libraries are all a great resource that every student at Howard should take advantage of.
