For the last 7 years of my life my plans was to become a Georgia Bulldog! Growing up a true Georgia southern girl, that is the only school that was imbedded in my mind. However, as I approached my last years of high school, it became difficult. Taking Honors Physics and Honors Calculus at the same time during my junior year, the best year of my high school life, resulted in my GPA dropping, which took me by surprise. I started to feel UGA was not going to be my home for the next four years.
I began to look into other schools that might catch my interest. However, at this point Howard was not even on my mind. Having no plans of leaving Georgia, I started to take Georgia State into consideration. Then, for some reason I realized that I wanted to attend an HBCU. I just felt like I really wanted to be a part of something I was not used to, many intelligent African-Americans! Crazy, I know! My mother was very happy with the idea.
So my search began. I narrowed it down to Spelman College, a school my mother always wanted me to attend, and Howard University a school I heard on Ludacris’s song (I’m Serious!). Spelman was definitely at the top because of financial reasons and it was very close to home. However, as senior year was approaching the end, I started to realize that I needed something new in my life. I wanted to try a new city, new atmosphere, far away from home, to just start over all together because that is what the college experience is all about. Howard was it! Then, my best friend got her acceptance letter to Howard as well, which was a big plus! Without any scholarships, (family) legacy, or anything, I ended up 10 hours away from home and that is how I became a BISON!
